Reconstruction of Gaza poses real challenge to charity, relief agencies: Hamdan

Abu Dhabi, April 8, 2009 (WAM) - The UAE called yesterday on the international relief organisations to act swiftly to put an end to the aggravating suffering of the Palestinian people in Gaza Strip which experienced tragic events, claiming thousands of innocent lives.
''Reconstruction of the Gaza Strip is today delivering one of the most complicated challenges the humanitarian organisation are facing,'' said HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and the President of the UAE Red Crescent Authority (RCA).
''Affected families of the Gaza events are still living in the open air without shelter or food and facing tragic humanitarian situation at a time when relief efforts are stumbling,'' Sheikh Hamdan said in an address today at the opening of the Dubai International Humanitarian Aid and Development Conference and Exhibition (DIHAD 2009).
''With what we have of mechanisms, we must vehemently sweep into action to fend off the dangers besetting the victims of war on Gaza. We need to mobilise efforts, coordinate stances and move quickly to arrest the deteriorating humanitarian condition on the Palestinian scene,'' Sheikh Hamdan said in his address read on his behalf by Mohammed Al Zarounie, manager of the RCA in Dubai.
He added that the world community and its humanitarian organisations and forces of good were demanded to provide safe environment for decent living to around 1.5 million Gazans.
He indicated that the RCA had devised an ambitious plan for reconstruction of Gaza in which about Dh 600 million, raised in a donation campaign, would be used to fund humanitarian projects in Gaza.
Globally, Sheikh Hamdan said that the international humanitarian scene was facing surmounting challenges due to the increasing disasters, conflicts and wars, the global financial crisis, shortage in food supply, high prices of commodities and climate changes.
According to him, these events have produced severe negative phenomena and human tragedies the world has never experienced before in form of legions of refugees, homeless and displaced persons who are running away from the flashpoints and war-stricken regions in pursuit of security, peace and food.
''This grim picture has overshadowed the forces of philanthropy in the world which take upon themselves the responsibility of safeguarding the dignity of humanity ...... Of, course the UAE has taken and is still occupying a leading place among these forces thanks to the sound directives its wise leadership,'' he added.
''We aspire through this conference for more strategic partnerships that will satisfy our ambitions at the humanitarian scene and add more assets to our organisation and boost joint cooperation for upholding and deepening the noble values and principles that we strive for,'' Sheikh Hamdan concluded.
