Mohammed bin Zayed receives House of Commons Speaker, French Minister

Abu Dhabi, April 9, 2009 (WAM) - Abu Dhabi Crown Prince and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, H.H. General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Tuesday night received at the Al-Bahr Palace the Speaker of the House of Commons, Michael Martin, who is currently on a visit to the UAE.
Sheikh Mohammed warmly welcomed the visitor and his entourage. He said such a visit gives a big boost to the historic relations of cooperation and friendship between the two countries.
He underscored the deeply-rooted relations between the UAE and Britain. He said the two countries remained committed to further boosting those ties based on the strong belief of their leaderships, who are deeply committed to boosting those historic relations.
"The best words to describe those relations are the words of our late father and UAE Founder, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al-Nahyan, who said: 'We know Britain for long years... Britain also knows us... We moved closer to Britain and Britain moved closer to us and we found in her great respect and fulfillment,'" he recounted.
Sheikh Mohammed said such a visit presents great opportunity for consultation on problems of the region and other areas of tension which deserved to be discussed by the leaderships of the two countries, adding that relations between the UAE and Britain were based on love and mutual respect, constructive, fruitful cooperation and development for the peoples of both countries.
He noted that relations between the two countries continue to witness significant progress for their mutual interest. He said those relations boost the region's stability and consolidate international cooperation, peace and security in a way that leads to achieving similarity in the views of the two countries on international issues like the Palestinian issue, Iraq and the global financial crisis.
Sheikh Mohammed praised the unshakable and permanent stance of the UK and its parliament on the issue of the UAE's three islands of Abu Musa and the Greater and Lesser Tunbs being occupied by Iran. He said that positive stance is in support of the UAE's efforts to reach peaceful solution to the problem through negotiations or international arbitration.
For his part, The British House of Commons Speaker expressed happiness on the warm reception accorded him and his entourage. He said this reflects the deeply rooted and historic relations of friendship between the peoples of UAE and Britain.
They discussed areas of cooperation and friendship between the two countries and ways to boost relations in various areas.
Present at the meeting were Umm Al-Qaiwain Deputy Ruler, H.H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Rashid Al Mualla, Speaker of the Federal National Council, Abdul Aziz Abdullah Al-Ghurair, Interior Minister, H.H. Lt. General Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, a number of sheikhs, ministers and senior officials.
Meanwhile, Sheikh Mohammed has also received at the Emirates Palace Hotel, French Minister in Charge of Economic Recovery Plan in France, Patrick David-Jean.
During the meeting, Sheikh Mohammed underscored the importance of exchange of visit in strengthening relations and building bridges between the two sides. He said relations between the UAE and France has special status and attributed that to the major role being played by French President, Nicolas Sarkozy in boosting bilateral ties between the two countries.
He pointed out some of the outcome of those special ties as including the opening of a branch of the Sorbonne University in the UAE to make the latter the first country in the world to have a branch of that university and the Louvre Museum outside France.
Sheikh Mohammed also touched on the Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (Masdar) and its renewable energy venture, saying that plan to inject US$15 billion into the company in the next ten years had been approved. He added that a number of foreign companies, including German, Spanish, Japanese and American companies, have presented their bids and acknowledged the high-tech capabilities of French firms in the area of renewable energy.
The French official, for his part, praised the UAE for its great achievements and for embarking upon great projects like the world museum (Guggenheim Abu Dhabi), which is under construction. He said the UAE and France have both adopted similar policy aimed at confronting the global economic crisis, adding that a positive development is unfolding in both the UAE and France as a result of that policy.
He said he has strong desire to probe for new ventures that would meet the needs of UAE, particularly in the areas related to the environment and modern cities, adding that he will urge French companies to proactively participate in the UAE's efforts to develop its use of renewable energy.
