Free Media Cities in UAE: New Book

The Cultural and Media Centre of HH Sheikh Sultan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister, has published a new study entitled, "Free Media Cities in UAE".
The book touches upon the emergence of these cities, their development, features and services they provide, as well as the rules and regulations governing them in the light of other Arab experiences in this field.
The study stresses that communication and information revolution has brought a quantum leap in changing people's lifestyles and shaping their worldviews.
It says that the United Arab Emirates (UAE), in its attempt to bridge the digital gap, internalise technology, attract investments, and diversify the sources of income, has undertaken to build free media cities at the beginning of the new millennium, a project that started to spread across the county.
From this stems the importance of this study which aims at providing a general overview of these cities and their goals. The study gives an historical background on such cities from the Romans up to the present time, shedding light on their concept and applications throughout this long period of human development.
It also tackles the legal framework regulating these free media cities, in line with the media regulations in the UAE and the changes and amendments introduced to them in the recent years in both Abu Dhabi and Dubai, mentioning in particular the nature of the newly launched Abu Dhabi Media City by Mubadala Development Company in October 2008.
It sheds light on Dubai Media City Free Zone (DMFZ), its goals and the services it provides, the tax and legislative incentives introduced in it, its regulatory authority, and other important issues related to DMFZ.
The book highlights the nature of Ras Al Khaimah Media Free Zone (RAKMFZ), born in 2006, with the aim of attracting investments of the world media and cinema industries to take the advantage of the favourable and distinctive position of the emirate.
The study gives prominence to Al Fujairah Free Media City established in 2005 as a leading media project aimed at bringing a quantum leap in the media sector in the emirate.

It concludes that these media cities will considerably contribute to presenting a new image of the United Arab Emirates at both regional and global levels.
