A grand mosque funded and built here in the Chadian capital, Ndjamena, by the Sharjah Government, has been inaugurated. Sheikh Saqr bin Mohammed bin Khalid Al-Qasimi, Secretary General of Sharjah's Department of Awqaf, inaugurated the second biggest mosque in the Central African country.
Named "Sharjah Grand Mosque", the about US$1 million mosque, which was built in line with the directive of H.H. Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al-Qasimi, Supreme Council member and Ruler of Sharjah, has the capacity of 3,500 worshippers, covers an area of 1,680 square metres from its overall land area of about 36,596 square metres and is located near the ministries complex in the Chadian capital.
The mosque was inaugurated in a colourful ceremony, opened with the recitation of the holy Quran, followed by a keynote address by Sheikh Saqr bin Mohammed bin Khalid Al-Qasimi, who conveyed to the leadership and people of Chad greetings and wishes of more progress, prosperity and stability from the Sharjah Ruler.
Chadian Interior Minister, who represented the Chadian president at the ceremony, expressed profound gratitude to the Sharjah Ruler, who, he said, continued to reach out to Chad and the Chadian people in various areas.
Sheikh Saqr later cut the ribbon to declare the mosque officially open and joined a large number of worshippers to offer the Friday prayer in the mosque.
