Open skies policy to be finalised by 2015

Abu Dhabi, April 16, 2009 (WAM) - The Arab World's open skies policy will be completed by 2015 with all Arab League member countries signing, ratifying and approving it at all levels, Sultan bin Saeed Al Mansouri, Minister of Economy, said yesterday according to a report published in "Emirates Business."
"All the air regulation treaties among Arab countries, particularly the open skies policy declarations approved in Damascus and Beirut, will be finalised by 2015," he said in his capacity as Chairman of the General Civil Aviation Authority.
"So far 11 Arab countries have signed the policy. Among them only five, including the UAE, have ratified and approved it."
Al Mansouri was attending the two-day International Air Transport, Air Space Law and Regulation Conference in the capital.
He said most Arab countries would implement the treaty to deal with increasing air traffic in the region.
"We expect all the Arab countries to join and sign, ratify and approve the policy in the period between 2010 and 2015."
The UAE's air traffic capacity had grown by 4.5 per cent in the first quarter of this year. "We will see further growth as the policy heads towards completion," he said.
Al Mansouri said the conference presented an opportunity to highlight the growth achieved by the UAE.
"The UAE continues to be a tourism hub both for the region and international markets and business aviation is projected to grow at 18 per cent annually here as against the global average of 10 per cent.
"Despite the challenges faced by the global aviation sector, the UAE continues to invest heavily in building the nation's aviation infrastructure," Al Mansouri said.
