Abu Dhabi introduces new rating method to improve quality of buildings

Abu Dhabi, April 21, 2009 (WAM) - The Abu Dhabi Urban Planning Council (UPC) has unveiled a New Buildings Rating Method, designed to dramatically improve quality of buildings in Abu Dhabi by allowing developers and their design teams to assess the performance of their proposed developments in light of rapidly evolving concepts for sustainability according to a report in 'Gulf News.'
The Rating Method will be an invaluable tool for designers, developers, government agencies and institutional investors. It will be accompanied by a Design Guide, which will provide helpful design techniques and information, along with an extensive reference to Living Systems and Livable Communities, which emphasises healthy living systems as the objective of a sustainable condition.
The new Rating Method incorporates the latest innovations and thinking around high performance buildings, natural systems integration and more livable communities. Adoption of method by developers would help projects respond better to the local climate and culture and propel Abu Dhabi’s reputation for innovation in its built environment.
During an upcoming pilot process, Estidama experts will be working together with several stakeholders to evaluate the Rating Method criteria in line with a variety of active building types and design techniques in Abu Dhabi.
UPC’s New Buildings Rating Method is the latest move in Abu Dhabi’s sustainability drive and follows hard on the heels of the development of Estidama Integrative Design Process (EIDP) which contains a series of mandatory directives and optional recommendations for preliminary energy modelling, water budgeting, simple material strategies and potential for habitat connectivity for every type of development project in the Emirate.
