UN Commission adopts UAE’s draft resolution
Vienna — April 26, 2009 (WAM) - United Nations Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice has adopted a revised draft resolution presented by UAE on the role and governance of civilian private security as an enhancement to crime prevention and
community safety. The commission, which held its 18th session during the week in Vienna, unanimously adopted on Saturday, the resolution containing five recommendations.
The draft resolution encouraged member states to examine the role played by civilian private security to understand the contribution of civilian private security to crime prevention and community safety efforts.
The draft resolution also invited member states to share best practices with each other and the UN Office on Drugs and Crime concerning oversight of civilian private security and its contribution to crime prevention and community safety.
The draft resolution requested the Executive Director of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime to convene an expert group to conduct an open-ended review of the role of the civilian private security. The resolution welcomed the offer of the government of the UAE to act as host to a meeting of the said expert group.
The draft resolution also requested the UN Office on Drugs and Crime to prepare a report on the implementation of the present resolution for consideration by the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice at its nineteenth session.
