UAE FM, Portuguese counterpart sign agreement
Lisbon - May 10, 2009 (WAM) - UAE Foreign Minister H.H Sheikh Abdullah Bin Zayed al-Nahyan and Portuguese Foreign Minister Luis Amado signed a joint declaration providing for opening embassies for both countries in Abu Dhabi and Lisbon.
The signing ceremony took place at the Portuguese foreign ministry in Lisbon premises of the on Friday concluding talks between the two sides on bilateral relations and Gulf and Middle East issues.
The two sides also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) providing for speeding up the conclusion of a double-taxation agreement as well as protecting investments.
An agreement on economic, trade, technical, health and education cooperation was also signed between the two sides. This came during Sheikh Abdullah's first official visit to Portugal. Sheikh Abdullah is leading a delegation comprising UAE ambassador to France and non-resident ambassador to Portugal Dr Abdullah Nasser al-Amri and head of economic affairs at the Foreign Ministry Khalid al-Qais.
Sheikh Abdullah also met the chairman of the Portuguese authority for investment and imports and heads of major Portuguese companies.
At the meeting, Sheikh Abdullah lectured on the development the UAE is enjoying in all areas as well as the robust economic and financial position it currently witness. He also told the audience about the big investment opportunities the UAE's economy is offering. He later answered questions by the audience.
Ambassador al-Amri termed Sheikh Abdullah's visit to Lisbon as "successful by all measures". He said Sheikh Abdullah received a warm welcome from Portuguese officials who hailed the great progress the UAE is witnessing in all areas.
