Abu Dhabi, May 11, 2009 (WAM) - HE Sultan Bin Saeed Al Mansouri, UAE Minister of Economy, and his German counterpart His Excellency Dr. Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg, inaugurated the Emirati- German Joint Council for Industry and Trade (AHK) at a function held at Emirates Palace, Abu Dhabi. Several high-ranking dignitaries and entrepreneurs attended the event.
The Emirati- German Joint Council for Industry and Trade (AHK) is the first bilateral federal business organization to be founded in the UAE. The boards (the Board of Directors and the Board of Trustees) will consist of prominent business representatives from both Germany and the UAE. Youssef Bin Omeir Youssef, Chairman of Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) has accepted the Board's choice to be the first Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Joint Council.
The first event of the new AHK was the German-Emirati Investment Workshop on Sunday, where Michael Pfeiffer, CEO of Germany Trade and Invest (gtai) was a keynote speaker.
'This ambitious initiative comes as result of the open policy that UAE adopts in line with the directions of our wise leadership, always keen to enhancing the position of our country on the world economic map. The new council will act as an economic umbrella that supervises the growth of economic relations between both countries and encourage exchange of investments,' Al Mansouri said.
'The need for unified efforts has become especially crucial following the unprecedented financial challenge that the world experienced. The Emirati- German Joint Council for Industry and Trade (AHK) is a perfect example of international collaboration to strengthen economic growth,' he added.
Al Mansouri said that the new council aims at encouraging economic and trade relations between Germany and the UAE. 'The council will immediately start its duties by providing information, counselling, market studies and reports related to both economies. The council will contribute to developing trade relation and enhancing the communication between the economic departments of the two countries,' he added.
'The Council was formed as a result of the meetings held by the UAE- German Joint Economic Committee, where both the UAE and Germany stressed the importance of establishing a common economic council,' he added.
The Council's mandate will include exchanging experiences in the field of advanced training programmes to develop human resources and to enhance its performance and productivity. The council will support the small and medium businesses between both countries as well. It will work to develop bilateral trade between the UAE and the Germany, which has been increased by 40pc in 2008 and reached Dh45.8 billion.
The Founder's meeting to elect seven Emirati and seven German members of the Board of Directors took place on May 4, 2009, at Rotana Beach Hotel in Abu Dhabi.
