New Al Ain plant to produce sulphur concrete for construction industry

Japan and the UAE will jointly establish the first sulphur concrete manufacturing facility in Al Ain that will provide a better and durable concreting option to the construction industry in the region.
The plant will produce sulphur-based material through a technology developed at the UAE University. The material has different applications in the construction industry and several trials have successfully been held.
Japan Cooperation Centre Petroleum (JCCP) will sponsor the project. A study for the project was conducted under an agreement signed last year on 17 September between JCCP, UAEU and the Marine Resources Research Centres (MRRC) of the UAE Ministry of Environment and Water, said a spokesman of the university yesterday. The study was designed to evaluate the applications of sulphur-concrete and to identify potential markets as the product will soon undergo industrial scale production.
"The project will also help the oil and gas industry to avoid disposal crises," he said. As a prelude to the commercial application of the study, a series of pipelines and manholes are being installed within the sewerage system in Al Ain to test products manufactured using the new technology.
Japan will train UAE engineers, monitor the performance of the sulphur modified concrete material, and develop guidelines for the use of the technology. The UAE University will provide the technical support for the project.
Dr Maitha Al Shamsi, UAE Minister of State and the Research Advisor of the UAEU, hailed the project as another milestone for scientific cooperation between Japan and the UAE. She said UAE University, JCCP and Nippon Oil Corporation scientists had been working on many scientific projects to provide industries with viable solutions and said the sulphur concrete project was the first one. – Gulf News
