SINGAPORE VOICES DISMAY OVER SUU KYI'S ARREST
By Zakaria Abdul Wahab

SINGAPORE, May 15 (Bernama) -- Singapore Friday voiced its dismay over the
Myanmar military government's action to file fresh charges against the country's
detained pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

"This is a setback for the national reconciliation process," the Foreign
Affairs Ministry said of its fellow member of the Association of Southeast Asian
Nations (Asean).

In a statement, Singapore said it was dismayed by this latest development,
and called on the Myanmar government to release Suu Kyi from detention.

The republic said it was also concerned about recent reports on the
63-year-old Nobel Peace prize winner's poor health, and that the arrest might
exacerbate Suu Kyi's condition.

Suu Kyi was charged Thursday with violating the terms of her house arrest
after an American man was caught swimming away from her lake house across Inya
Lake in Yangon this month.

The Nobel Peace laureate has been under detention for over a decade now by
the Myanmar authorities for breaching strict state security laws.
