UAE seeks allies against human smugglers
Dr Anwar Gargash, the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, has characterised the trade in people as a pressing issue that can be curbed with international cooperation according to a report by "The National." “I would like to reiterate that the UAE is proud of its human rights achievements in a short span of time,” he told delegates this year at the Human Rights Council in Geneva, Switzerland. “But it also humbly realises that much more needs to be done, and is ready to do the same both individually and at the global level.
In 2005, when the UAE signed an agreement with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) to rehabilitate child jockeys used in camel racing, Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Minister of Interior, signed an agreement with Germany to fight human trafficking and other major crimes.
A report on human trafficking in the UAE based on data from 2007 stated that efforts to coordinate against human trafficking led to agreements between the UAE and India, Pakistan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, China, Thailand, and the Philippines.
