Turkey-UAE annual bilateral trade touches US$9 billion
The annual bilateral trade between Turkey and the UAE is valued at US$9 billion (Dh33 billion), which includes trade through the free zones, Hakki Akil, Ambassador of Turkey to the UAE, said here on Monday.
"The network of economic relations between Turkey and the UAE has been gradually expanding, and the annual bilateral trade volume recorded US$9 billion last year, placing Turkey among the biggest trade partners of the UAE," said Akil at the inauguration of the Abu Dhabi Turkish Business Council.
Akil said in 2008 Turkey's total exports to the UAE were valued at US$8 billion with iron and steel, jewellery, construction material, petrochemicals, furniture, textiles and clothing comprising the main exports.
"From the UAE, we imported items worth US$680 million last year. These included aluminium, petrochemical products, oil products, plastics and jewellery," he added. "We see great opportunities to boost mutual investments in various fields, and we are especially interested in establishing strategic cooperation in the energy sector and also fostering closer ties between our real estate and banking sectors," said Akil.
He said exploring new venues of cooperation in the petrochemical and tourism sectors would be another important step in strengthening Turkey-UAE economic cooperation.
The Abu Dhabi Turkish Business Council has as its Honorary Chairman Sheikh Nahyan Bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, the UAE Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research. Akil said the Business Council, set up under the auspices of the Abu Dhabi Chamber of Commerce and Industry, will seek to facilitate business relations, especially mutual investments between Turkey and the UAE.
