UAE aircraft traffic surges 11.5% in May
The aircraft movements in the UAE rose 11.5 per cent in May compared with a year- ago period despite the economic slowdown, according to the UAE General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) according to a report in Emirates Business 24|7.
There were 48,149 aircraft movements last month compared with 43,181 in May 2008. And the May 2009 figure represents a 1.7 per cent increase on the previous month's total of 47,302. The aircraft movements increased in each of the first five months of this year compared with 2008.
But in April 2009, worldwide passenger traffic decreased by three per cent compared with April 2008, according to the Airports Council International (ACI).
International passenger traffic declined by 1.8 per cent in April 2009 while domestic traffic fell by 4.9 per cent. The Middle East led in April with a 9.5 per cent increase and all cities in the region reported positive results.
In North Africa popular tourist destinations such as Agadir, Alexandria, Algiers, Casablanca and Cairo reported good growth, as did some of the major international hubs in the Asia Pacific region. The swine flu outbreak had a minimal effect on the April figures as the virus struck at the end of the month.
Cargo traffic is still severely affected by the global economic crisis with international freight down 23 per cent and domestic traffic down 9.5 per cent in April.
