Russian tennis player Medvedev gets off to winning start at Australian Open

MOSCOW, January 16. /TASS/. Russian Daniil Medvedev defeated American tennis player Marcos Giron in his first round match at the Australian Open in Melbourne on Monday. The match ended 6-0, 6-1, 6-2 in favor of the seventh seeded Russian. Giron was not seeded. Medvedev will play in the second round against Australia's John Millman, who received a special wild-card invitation from the tournament organizers. Earlier on Monday, Lucky Loser Pavel Kotov of Russia lost to unseeded Tallon Griekspoor of the Netherlands 3-6, 6-7, 3-6. Medvedev, 26, is ranked eighth in the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP). In 2022, he was the number one ranked tennis player in the world for 16 weeks. Giron, 29, is 56th in the world rankings. He has no ATP titles under his belt. The American has never made it past the third round of any Grand Slam tournament. The Australian Open is a hard-court tournament that ends on January 29. The total purse in 2023 is over $53.4 million. The Russian men's singles champions were Yevgeny Kafelnikov (1999) and Marat Safin (2005). The reigning winner is Spaniard Rafael Nadal, who defeated Medvedev in the final.
