UAE's Representative to UN Geneva office hosts reception

UAE Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office at Geneva Obaid Salim Al-Za'abi on Friday hosted a reception in honour of UAE Minister of Labour Saqr Ghobash who is in Geneva to take part in the to the current 98th Session of the International Labour Conference, which started in Geneva, Switzerland on June 3rd.
A large number of Ministers of Labour, heads of delegations to the said conference, officials from the International Labour Organization (ILO) and other international bodies, heads of diplomatic missions in Geneva were present at the reception.
During the reception, two memorandums of understanding were signed between the UAE and India and the Philippines. The signing of the said MoUs follows "the Abu Dhabi Declaration of Asian Countries of Origin and Destination" in January 2008 and aims to improve the management of the life cycle of contractual labour as well as to improve the quality of life of expatriate workforce.
The life cycle, Al-Za'abi said, consists of four phases: pre-departure preparations, residency and work in the country of destination, pre-return preparation and then return and reintegration into the community in the country of origin.
The MoUs defines the implementation of a pilot plan by the three countries to document the management of 3000 workers over a space of 2 years to find out the best practices.
This, he added, reflects the UAE's keen interest in and serious efforts to improve the living conditions of expatriate workers as per the internationally recognized standards.
The Abu Dhabi Declaration, which was adopted in Abu Dhabi in January 2008 by labour ministers from 20 countries of origin and destination recognizes that properly managed temporary contractual mobility will benefit both countries of origin and destination and improve the well-being of temporary contractual workers.
