Khalifa appoints Hamdan Bin Zayed as Ruler's Representative in the Western Region
President HH Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, in his capacity as the Ruler of Abu Dhabi, has issued a decree appointing HH Sheikh Hamdan Bin Zayed Al Nahyan as the Ruler's Representative in the Western Region.
Born in Al Ain in 1963, Sheikh Hamdan is the fourth son of the late founding father of the nation Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and brother of HH Sheikh Khalifa.
A holder of BA in Political Sciences and Business Administration from the UAE University in Al Ain, Sheikh Hamdan chaired the UAE Football Association from 1984 to 1993 and joined the foreign ministry as its undersecretary from 1985 to 1990 after which he became minister of state for foreign affairs from 1990 to 2005 and then deputy prime minister since October 2003.
A father of six boys and three daughters, Sheikh Hamdan is the incumbent chairman of the Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi - and President of the Red Crescent Authority as well as Chairman of the UAE Foreign Aid Coordination Office.
A veteran pilot by practice, Sheikh Hamdan is also an ardent lover of safaris, falconry and marine sports. He owns the Aryam Stables which have won several cups at international horse racing championships.
In the humanitarian work, Sheikh Hamdan has earned international praise for his great, relentless efforts, personally and professionally, in extending a helping hand to the international community in humanitarian assistance.
He is a statement whose name is synonymous to charity, philanthropy and good deed not only at the UAE level but also at the Arab and international arenas.
As a deputy prime minister, Sheikh Hamdan travelled around the globe to bolster the foundations of the UAE foreign policy. However, his trip to Iran in 2002 signalled a milestone under the UAE calm policy and frank dialogue taking into consideration relations of neighbourhood and historic ties.
While in office, Sheikh Hamdan chaired several joint ministerial committees with sisterly and friendly countries and represented the country in many Arab, Gulf, regional and international gatherings.
Recognising his remarkable political and humanitarian contributions, many governments and charity organisations have awarded him medals and honours of achievements.
Locally, Sheikh Hamdan maintains good bonds of love, respect and intimacy with citizens of the UAE. He interacts with them, opens dialogue with them and shares them their joy in several occasions.
Environment and heritage take centre stage of his thinking. He pushes local efforts for conserving and developing the environment and wildlife and fighting of desertification.
As a passionate falconer, Sheikh Hamdan is currently leading the Emirates Falconers' Club.
During his presidency of the UAE Camel Racing Federation, the heritage sport has seen spectacular qualitative and quantitative leaps.
He was crowned knight of the Arab charity by the Arab Giving Forum and awarded the Hamdan bin Rashid Award for Volunteers in Humanitarian, Medical Services.
