UAE preparing comprehensive law on protection of children's rights: FNC member

Abu Dhabi, June 23, 2009 (WAM) - An all-encompassing law on the rights of children, as stated by the relevant international conventions, is in the making in the UAE, according to a member of the UAE's Federal National Council (FNC). Every right that is spelled out in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child as inherent to the human dignity and harmonious development of every child is being protected by the UAE as, said Dr Fatima Al-Mazrouei.
"The UAE was among the first nations to ratify the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child", Al-Mazrouei told the second Arab parliamentarians' conference on Childhood which kicked off yesterday at the General Secretariat of the Arab League in Cairo, Egypt.
The UAE, she added, is keen in enacting all laws and legislations to ensure the protection of children and in doing so it does not violate the Convention.
A whole department was set up at the UAE Ministry of Social Affairs; the FNC member noted adding that UAE government has allocated enough funds to implement relevant protection programmes. She further asked the Conference to check what states have committed independent funds for children.
The FNC member further urged for a report on the violations of the rights of Palestinian children in Gaza Strip where the siege laid on the Strip is inflicting a tremendous and horrendous psychological suffering on them.
The Convention on the Rights of the Child is the first legally binding international instrument to incorporate the full range of human rights civil, cultural, economic, political and social rights. In 1989, world leaders decided that children needed a special convention just for them because people under 18 years old often need special care and protection that adults do not. The leaders also wanted to make sure that the world recognized that children have human rights too.
