Gargash: We are optimistic on hosting IRENA headquarters
Abu Dhabi, June 29, 2009 (WAM) - Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Dr. Anwar Mohammed Gargash, has expressed optimism on UAE's chance of hosting the headquarters of the International Renewable Energy Authority (IRENA) when the issue of host country for the international organisation is put to vote Sunday in the Egyptian resort town of Sharm el Sheikh.
Gargash made the exclusive statement on Abu Dhabi TV programme "Al-Madar Al-Usbu'e". "We are very optimistic about the outcome of the vote based on scientific calculations, some positive signals and hopeful messages we received from the concerned countries," he said.
He based his optimism on a massive concerted efforts of UAE officials, charged with campaigning for the achievement of that goal, under the leadership of Foreign Minister, H.H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, whose successful diplomatic shuttles made a generous contribution to the chances of the UAE.
"We are no more living in the world of the sixties and seventies of the 20th century when all international organisations were headquartered in either Europe or North America," he said explaining why the UAE's diplomatic push based on a number of facts and logics, including the need to have a new criteria of distribution of bases of international organisations in the world, is having high chance of success.
"There is the need to be fairer in the distribution of these agencies. Therefore, having the IRENA headquarters in Abu Dhabi will break that old system and tell the world in one clear voice that there is fairness in the distribution of international institutions. This message will get the maximum support because it reflects the feelings of many countries of the world in Africa, Latin America and Asia," he added.
