Mohammed bin Rashid approves the Federal Government Communications Strategy
Dubai, July 6, 2009 (WAM) - Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of UAE and Ruler of Dubai has approved the Federal Government communications strategy aimed at managing the reputation of UAE and establishing a comprehensive system for communications in the different Federal entities.
Developed by the Government Communication Office under the Ministry of Cabinet Affairs to support the general strategy of the Federal Government to achieve its goals, the strategy focuses on assisting communication teams across the Federal Government in establishing a balance between developing an integrated communications strategy and pro-actively tackling important media issues.
The outlined strategy focuses on the strategic importance of managing the Government's communications issues in a very special and unremitting manner to enhance transparency and flexibility within the Federal entities, besides adopting a more professional and active approach when communicating with the public. A number of strategic initiatives which can be easily measured based on pre-defined performance indicators have also been outlined.
With the media industry having developed and progressed both regionally and globally in terms of diversity and magnitude, it has necessitated the need for a comprehensive communications strategy by the Government to actively approach the media and facilitate the flow of information to the general public.
The communications strategy stresses on the importance of incessantly using different communications tools to deliver the Federal Government messages to the media. Directed towards building the professional capabilities and skills of Government communications teams, the strategy also includes mechanisms that support the Government's decision making process through active media relations and media strategizing.
The Government Communications Office (GCO) was established by a UAE Cabinet decree No. (10/29) for the year 2008 in a meeting dated 09/03/2008 with the aim of substantially improving the internal and external communication channels in the federal government of the UAE.
The responsibilities of the office, which functions within the General Secretariat of the Cabinet, include enhancing internal communication between different federal ministries and entities through the sharing of information and exchange of expertise, as well as strategic planning, building the media and communications capacities of various federal government entities and conducting communications-oriented research.
The GCO also enhances external communications with interested stakeholders with the aim of ensuring transparency, accuracy of information and consistency of government messages in alignment with the UAE Government Strategy.
