Action started for getting back money stashed abroad:Indian PM
New Delhi, July 30 (PTI) Facing flak from opposition on
the issue of unaccounted money of Indians stashed abroad,
Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Thursday said the
government has already initiated steps for getting back the
black money.
"Action has already started," Singh said in the Rajya
Sabha (Upper House of Indian Parliament) during Question Hour.
The Prime Minister referred to Indian Finance Minister
Pranab Mukherjee's remarks Wednesday stating that he
(Mukherjee) had "specifically dealt" with the issue.
Replying to the debate on the Finance Bill in the Upper
House Wednesday, the Finance Minister had said the government
is in the process of amending double taxation avoidance
treaties with about 100 countries so that a legal framework
can be provided to facilitate exchange of information on black
money.
The Prime Minister made the remark today after Prakash
Javadekar (BJP) sought to know from him as to what his
government was doing to get back the money within 100 days.
Indian External Affairs Minister S M Krishna in reply to
the main question on G-8 meeting said the developed nations
seemed inclined to enhance financial support for developing
nations.
Krishna said IMF and other financial institutions would
be asked to restore credit growth and jobs.
On the question on climate change raised by Sitaram
Yechury (CPI-M), Krishna said India's stand was well
enumerated by the Prime Minister Wednesday.
He said the G-8 declaration accepted that increase in
global average temperature above pre-industrial levels ought
not to exceed two degrees centigrade. PTI ASI
