Dhaka, Jul 30 (PTI) In a goodwill gesture, the Indian
Army Thursday presented its Bangladeshi counterpart with an
"artificial rock climbing wall", a combat training tool which
will help troops train in various aspects of mountaineering.

Militarymen from both sides, in a joint exercise,
marked the installation of the wall presented to Bangladesh
Army's Chief of General Staff Maj Gen Abdul Hakim Hafiz by
General Deepak Kapur, Chief of Indian Army staff here at a
cantonment in north eastern Sylhet.

"This is a gift for Bangladesh Army on behalf of (our)
chief of Army staff General Deepak Kapur," Indian High
Commissioner in Dhaka Pinak Ranjan Chakravarty said at the
installation ceremony of the combat training tool at the
School of Infantary and Tactics (SI&T) at the Jalalabad
cantonment.

Maj Gen Hafiz received the gift from Indian side on
behalf of Army Chief Gen Abdul Mubeen, saying "this is a
goodwill gesture of Indian military for Bangladesh Army."

According to an Indian High Commissioner statement,
the construction of the rock wall was completed within a
record time of 120 days at the cantonment by a private firm
deputed by the Indian Army.

With a vertical height of 12 metres, the rock climbing
wall is a training aid for troops to carry out rock climbing,
slithering, rappelling and other aspects of commandos and
mountain training.

"This training aid is designed for multi purpose
activities and will prove an excellent training platform for
the Bangladesh Army," the statement said.

An inter-service public relation statement said the
crucial tool was installed as an Indian gift at the SI&T to
faciliate particularly the commando training of the
Bangladeshi troops.

According to the two statements, last year the then
chief of Army Gen Moeen U Ahmed, requested for the rock
climbing wall during his India visit.

The armed forces of the two countries witnessed
enhanced bilateral engagements in the last one year with the
visit to India by Gen Moeen Ahmed and the recent visit by Gen
Kapur.

Last year, Bangladesh Navy and Air Force chiefs
visited New Delhi as part of the two armies routine exchange
programmes. PTI AR
