Scarlett murder case: Prosecutor`s personal email hacked
Panaji, Aug 1 (PTI) The lawyer of Fiona Mackeown, mother
of slain British teenager Scarlett Keeling, has said his
personal email has been hacked.
The email was leaked earlier last week and it was
reported on the Internet subsequently.
The hacking and publishing the email content on the
website was an attempt to weaken the prosecution's case and
strengthen the defence, Fiona's lawyer Vikram Varma has said.
The website has carried the details of Varma's email
which comprised Keeling's autopsy reports and personal
communications made in his capacity as the Russian national's
counsel.
A contract, signed by Mackeown with a British channel to
shoot a documentary on incidents after Keeling's death, is
also in public domain after this leak.
Keeling's body was found on Anjuna beach near here on
February 18, 2008 and the murder case is being handled by the
CBI, which is yet to file a charge sheet. Two locals,
including a beach shack waiter, have been booked.
The website in question publishes what it called
"anonymous submissions and leaks of sensitive governmental,
corporate or religious documents, while attempting to preserve
the anonymity and untraceability of its contributors".
The leak is also an attempt to malign Fiona, Varma, a
Goa-based Supreme Court lawyer said.
Attempts have been made right from the beginning of the
case to malign Fiona, who has been accused of leaving her
daughter alone in Goa, he said, adding that the hacking has
been done "to show Fiona as a careless mother".
However, Verma said, the leak would not hamper the case.
"There is nothing in my email which is objectionable or
related to national security. It's just private conversations
with my friends," he said.
Keeling's death had hogged international attention after
it was revealed that the teenager was drugged, raped and left
to die on the beach. PTI
