Bikeways to be constructed in Almaty

Almaty, August 18, 2009 (Khabar) - Almaty residents were encouraged to switch from their motor cars to bicycles as the mayor of Almaty promised that special lanes will be constructed in the near future. A cycle race dedicated to Sport and Winter Asian Games Day has taken place in Almaty. Over 500 people, including professional cyclists, veterans of cycle racing and municipal authorities, took part in the event. All the racers had to cover a distance of 7 kilometres.

Zhaniya Aubakirova, rector of Almaty conservatory:
- There is nothing but good in it. The city is so small and there is no air. A good number of people would have got healthier and it would generally bring a lot of joy and good emotions. It’s quite feasible. It’s better to ride bikes than fancy jeeps.

Many participants did not follow the bike ride’s main rule which is «no overtaking». There were daredevils who crossed the race course in less than 10 minutes while the mayor of Almaty Akhmetzhan Yesimov, who headed the column at the starting line, followed instruction the whole the way.

Akhmetzhan Yesimov, mayor of Almaty:
- Cars occupy a lot of space. There are problems of car parks, traffic and emission of hazardous agents in our city whereas bikes don’t emit any gases. It is quite difficult, but we are planning out routes in the city where special bikeways will be constructed.

This decision has long been anticipated. Despite the lack of infrastructure, there are thrill seeker-cyclists in the city who are not intimidated by the city streets. Some confessed that they ride bikes to work both in rainy and snowy weather conditions. According to them, it is worth it as they avoid traffic jams and live a healthy lifestyle. Akhmetzhan Yesimov, hope that the number of such people grows as bicycle paths are built. He reported that a cycling ground of 2 kilometers will open in the neighborhood of «Mega Center» in September. A 4500-meter cycle track will be constructed along the «Terrenkur» pedestrian area nearby the Malaya Almatinka River and bicycle parking lots will appear on the largest streets of Almaty.
