.RF govt panel to discuss future of AVTOVAZ on Tuesday.

MOSCOW, October 6 (Itar-Tass) - First Vice-Premier Igor Shuvalov is to
hold a meeting of the government commission on the ensurance of
sustainable development of the economy here on Tuesday.
Shuvalov said the principal item on the agenda would be the
development of the domestic car industry, including the future of its
leading automotive enteprise -- the AVTOVAZ car factory.
The problems of the car manufacturing enterprise, which accounts for
about one-quarter of car sales on the Russian domestic market, have been
hot news for all the media and headache for government officials. This
locomotive of the domestic car industry has virtuallly found itself
facing the risk of complete departure from the market while the financial
and economic downturn has exacerbated the factory's problems still further.
On October 5, Putin convened a special meeting with the management of
the enterprise and its main stakeholders -- RENAULT and the
Rostechkhnologii State Corporation. Putin said when addressing those
present, "We are well aware that if nothing is done, the enterprise would
be engaging in feverish activities for some time and would subsequently
quit the market and cease to exsit". "We cannot allow that to happen," he
added.
A way out, the Premier believes, is in the need for the earliest
technological modernisation of the enterprise, the modernisation that
must enable it to get its "second wind". Putin directed the government
together with the management and sharehodlers of AVTOVAZ to work out three
plans: those for financial normalisation, technical modernisation, and
social development. All these three spheres are of equal importance, the
Premier emphasized. The State intends "to assume part of the burden",
including the financial one, he pointed out.
