President of Argentina receives UAE FM
Buenos Aires - Oct 10, 2009 (WAM) - President of Argentina Cristina Fernandez welcomed at Presidential Palace UAE Foreign Minister HH Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
Sheikh Abdullah is on a whirlwind tour of South America to boost UAE relations and cooperation with its countries.
The President of Argentina and Sheikh Abdullah explored ways of enhancing bilateral cooperation and exchanged views on a host of regional and international issues of mutual concern.
The Argentinean head of state said her country was keen to further developing its bonds with the UAE and lends special attention on this for the prominent place the UAE is maintaining globally.
Later, Sheikh Abdullah told a session of talks between the two sides that the UAE emerged as the promising economic future for investors and businessmen thanks to its tireless efforts to forge trade and economic partnerships and conclude free trade agreements with its strategic partners and economic blocs around the world.
''The UAE enjoys a stable business environment which spurs global business community to pump more funds in the UAE as one of the world's most safe haven for investment. The government is now focusing on creativity and innovation- based economic sectors,'' Sheikh Abdullah said in the meeting which was attended from the UAE side by Minister of State H.E Reem Al Hashemi and Chairman of Dubai Ports World, Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, and from the Argentinean side by ministers of foreign affairs, economy, planning and industry.
''The UAE policy is in response to the international trend towards establishing strategic partnerships and trade liberation and opening up of markets,''Sheikh Abdullah added.
Sheikh Abdullah highlighted the importance of Argentina to the UAE as the host of the second UAE embassy in Latin America after Brazil.
The UAE foreign minister also invited President Cristina to visit the UAE.
The two sides stressed the need for signing two agreements on avoidance of double taxation and encouragement and protection of investment as key magnets for attracting investors.
The Argentinean head of state lauded UAE efforts to transform its oil-dependent economy to a diversified one that posts rapid growth in all sectors.
She also affirmed her country's desire to formulate a viable partnership between small and medium scale enterprises in the two friendly countries.
The two sides stressed the importance of boosting bilateral cooperation in areas of tourism, inter-trade, energy and renewable energy. Air transport is one of the key sectors of interest as the Emirates Airline will run its maiden flight to the South American country in 2012.
Sheikh Abdullah urged the Argentinean president to support the DP World's expansion plan in Argentina and tap its rich experience in management of seaports and terminals.
Then the UAE and Argentina concluded a memorandum of understanding on political consultation between ministries of foreign affairs.
Signed by Sheikh Abdullah and his Argentinean counterpart Jorge Taiana, the agreement will see the two countries hold regular discussions for bolstering bilateral bonds and exchange views on regional and international topics of mutual interest.
The MoU during talks between the two ministers which covered ways of consolidating bilateral cooperation in political, economic and commercial sectors.
The UAE foreign minister said his trip to Argentina provided an ideal opportunity to familiarise himself with the investment, economic and trade potentials in Argentina and to update Argentinean officials and business community on investment offers they could tap in the UAE.
Sheikh Abdullah invited his Argentinean counterpart to attend the preparatory meeting of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) in Abu Dhabi next January.
While in Argentina, Sheikh Abdullah visited the Monument of Don Jose de San Martin, a national hero, and placed a wreath at it.
Later, Sheikh Abdullah met with Ruben Filipas, Chairman of Club Estudiantes de La Plata which will take part in the Abu Dhabi FIFA Club World Championship in next December.
Filipas presented a memento to Sheikh Abdullah and thanked him for the warm welcome and hospitality the club received during its recent visit to the UAE. In return, Sheikh Abdullah presented a gift to the chairman of the club. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
