MINISTER WARNS OF POSSIBLE DENGUE OUBREAKS

Jakarta, Nov 25 (ANTARA) - Health Minister Endang Rahayu Sedyaningsih has asked regional governments to prepare their apparatuses and take anticipatory steps in the face of possible dengue outbreaks during and after the this year's rainy season.

"We have sent circulars to governors asking them to increase alertness over the possible emergence of diseases during the rainy season," the minister said during the anniversary celebrations of the Cipto Mangunkusumo hospital here on Wednesday.

On a separate occasion, Rita Kustriastuti, director of disease control of animal causes affairs of the Health Ministry, said meanwhile that the circulars contained advices on the possible high incidence of diseases during and after the rainy season.

"We also hope that the regional governments would take anticipatory steps by mobilizing the local people to eradicate mosquito nests. It should not happen that actions are taken only after the outbreak of a disease," she said.

She said that dengue fever broke out every year in areas or provinces in the country, particularly during and after the rainy season.

Rita said that this year the number of dengue victims was relatively smaller than that of last year which stood at 115,094 people, of whom 897 died.
