NEW CHIEF DETECTIVE READY TO HELP SOLVE CENTURY CASE

Jakarta, Nov 25 (ANTARA) - The newly named chief of the National Police's detectives, Inspector General Ito Sumardi Djunisanyoto, said here Wednesday he was ready to help solve the Bank Century case.

"We must be ready (to do it) using the existing mechanism," he said when asked about public demands for the police to investigate the case.

Sumardi has been named the new chief of the National Police's Criminal Investigation Department to replace Commissioner General Susno Duaji.

He said he would use all his knowledge of legal science to study the case.

He said he would hold consultations with expert staff consisting of 13 professors with regard to studying the case and seeking inputs for its handling.

Sumardi whose previous job was coordinator of the National Police Chief's staff of experts, said the case could not be viewed from a police aspect only but must be seen comprehensively to see its construction.

Thereby, the police would know what they had to do with all the additional data and information from the department's deputy chief Inspector General Dikdik Mulyana.

"This is a common problem and therefore I hope it will turn into an extraordinary case," he said adding that a case like the Century case happened everywhere.

Several members of the House of Representatives (DPR) have called for the exercise of the DPR's right of inquiry with regard to the case because of a suspicion of a banking crime in the case of Rp6.7 trillion worth of bailout.
