Baltic countries' PMs to discuss long-term cooperation.

RIGA, June 3 (Itar-Tass) - The 7th session of the Council of Baltic Sea States (CBSS) is to be held here on Tuesday and Wednesday. The Premiers are to discuss a wide range of subjects concerning cooperation in the region.

The upcoming discussions will deal primarily with long-term priorities for cooperation in the fields of education and culture, interaction in the spheres of energy and the environment, economic development, and civil security.

Latvian Foreign Minister Maris Riekstins told journalists here on Monday that the chief delegates would gather for an informal dinner to discuss matters concerning energy supply reliability, renewable energyresources, and environmental protection.

European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso is also to make a speech, telling those present about contribution by each CBSSmember-country to the development of Europe and its achievements in the attainment of the goals of the Lisbon Strategy.

A republican Foreign Ministry source has told Itar-Tass that theLatvian side as the CBSS presiding country from July 1, 2007, to June 30, 2008, will acquaint the Heads of Government of the work done during the past year, proposals about introducing reforms in the CBSS and of priorities for further activities of the organisation.

The Foreign Ministry source pointed out that those present at the session would also discuss a Baltic Sea Strategy, which the EuropeanCommission is planning to work out before the summer of 2009. Sweden and Finland have already presented their proposals about the project. Latvia is to prepare them before the end of this month.

The Prime Ministers of all CBSS member-countries, with the exception of the Heads of Government of Russia and Germany, will attend the session.

Foreign Minister Franck-Walter Steinmeier instead of Chancellor Angela Merkel will represent the latter at the session. Igor Shuvalov, First Vice-Premier, will lead a Russian delegation.

Within the framework of the CBSS session, the 1st international business conference of Baltic countries, organised by the Latvian side is to be held in Riga within the framework of the CBSS session, with about 500 guests participating. The Heads of Government of CBSSmember-countries, experts, financiers, and chiefs of many major companies from Europe, Russia, and other CIS (Commonwealth of Independent States) countries, the United States, and China are expected to take part in the business conference as rapporteurs.

The CBSS was established in Copenhagen in 1992 at a conference of the Foreign ministers of the Baltic Sea states. The idea to set up such a council was suggested by the Social-Democratic parties of Denmark, Sweden, and Germany.

The CBSS is an international regional organisation that comprises eleven countries (Denmark, Norway, Finland, Sweden, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Germany, Poland, Russia, and Iceland), as well as arepresentative of the European Commission.

The Netherlands, Britain, Italy, the US, France, Ukraine, and theNorth-Western Parliamentary Association have been granted the status of observers at ministerial sessions.
