UAE produced world's first ever cloned camel

Abu Dhabi, Dec 9, 2009 (WAM) - The world's first cloned camel was formally unveiled to the world yesterday at the Camel Reproduction Centre in Dubai. Injaz, translated as ‘achievement', since her birth eight months ago, on April 8, has been showing characteristics similar to that of a normal female calf and has been "eating and doing everything she should be doing".
It's a significant breakthrough because Injaz is the first ever camelid cloned in the world. The scientists at the Centre are now hoping to clone good racing camels and good milk-producing camels. It also allows to preserve genetic material, reports published by UAE dailies said.
Injaz is the clone of a camel slaughtered for its meat in 2005. The DNA of the dead camel was extracted and injected into an egg taken from the surrogate mother. The egg was then re-implanted into the surrogate mother’s womb.
Injaz, whose name means ‘success’ in Arabic, was born after a 378-day pregnancy. Subsequent tests have shown that the cloned animal’s DNA is an exact copy of the dead mother, not the surrogate parent.
Established 20 years ago and financed by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, the Camel Reproduction Centre created the first cama a cross between a llama and a camel born in 1998.
