UAE renews commitment for relief assistance in coordination with the United Nations
New York - Dec 9, 2009 (WAM) - UAE has renewed its commitment to implement long-term aid programs and relief projects in countries hit by natural disasters and armed conflicts in cooperation and coordination with the United Nations.
Anwar Osman Barot, Deputy Permanent Representative of UAE in United Nations made this commitment during the Special meeting of the UN General Assembly that discussed ways to coordinate the humanitarian assistance provided by the World body to the affected countries.
The recent reports of UN Secretary-General pointed out that the challenges facing the United Nations in the field of humanitarian assistance have multiplied dramatically over the past few years due to the increase of natural disasters resulting from climate change and displacement of people as a result of armed conflict. Besides the global financial crisis and food crisis also led to decline in national and international response to provide relief.
The UAE official stressed the need to redouble the efforts of the United Nations and its concerned partners to meet the growing humanitarian needs and the provision of financial and human resources necessary to enable it carry out its responsibilities which requires strengthening the cooperation of all countries with the UN by every possible mean.
"We recognise that international partnership and cooperation with the UN are the most successful methods to achieve best results for humanitarian activities in the world subsequently we are keen to coordinate many of our initiatives and contributions with the relevant United Nations agencies implementing emergency relief and long-term projects in countries affected by natural disasters and armed conflict", he affirmed.
"It is through our membership in the Donor Community for UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), that we contributed towards UN work to achieve maximum efficiency in the field of humanitarian activities", he added.
Also, he expressed UAE's pride in launching the 2009 Consolidated Appeal for the United Nations, which is for the first time in the Middle East.
Moreover, he mentioned UAE government and charitable communities’ contribution in international efforts to provide relief assistance in times of emergency for affected areas in various parts of the world.
The humanitarian contribution of the UAE has doubled during the past two years by 300 % to reach 156 million dollars in 2008 compared to 45 million dollars in 2007.
Barot also elaborated the assistance provided by UAE to Palestinian people and its government to enable it to face its humanitarian ordeal arising out of the oppressive Israeli occupation of its territory.
The UAE has translated its political and moral solidarity with the Palestinian people into continuous financial and economic support including humanitarian, developmental and technical assistances with more than three billion dollars during the last two years.
In addition to its pledge to pay 174 million dollars for the reconstruction of Gaza, which was announced in Sharm el-Sheikh in March 2009.
He stressed that the UAE has recently doubled its annual contributions made to the United Nations Relief and Work Agency (UNRWA) enabling it to carry out its responsibilities towards the Palestinian refugees.
