UAE, China enjoy strong trade ties: Gao
Sharjah, Dec 14, 2009 (WAM) - Trade relations between China and the UAE have broadened dramatically over the past years thus placing UAE as the largest trading partner of China in the GCC, said China's Ambassador to the UAE, Gao Yusheng according to a report in "The Gulf Today."
"Trade between China and the GCC region as a whole, has grown over the years, and has also been booming despite the economic downturn," said the envoy, while speaking to The Gulf Today on the sidelines of the 7th Chinese Commodities Fair (CCFS) in Sharjah on Sunday.
The fair was inaugurated jointly by Sheikh Khalid Bin Abdullah Bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Chairman of the Sharjah Ports Authority, and Gao Yusheng, Ambassador of China in the UAE, on Sunday.
He said Chinese products and services are in great demand not only across the globe but also in the GCC due to its affordability and superior quality.
The UAE is also the largest market for Chinese products in the Arab world, he said. Political, economic and trade relations between the two countries have made great strides since 1984 when the two nations established diplomatic tie, pointed out the envoy.
He said that China would continue to work with the UAE to further increase high-level exchanges and make full use of the existing mechanisms to deepen bilateral relationships.
The CCFS has been jointly sponsored by the Ministry of Commerce of the People's Republic of China, and the SCCI, and organised by Chinamex and Expo Centre Sharjah.
The Chairman of the Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Ahmed Mohammed Al Midfa also expressed similar sentiments saying that the UAE and China enjoy very strong economic ties.
He noted that CCFS is a manifestation of the booming relations between the UAE and China, adding that the event has successfully infused impetus in the bilateral ties between the two countries, with the potential to help further strengthen cooperation, especially in the arena of trade.
This year's CCFS is hosting over 400 well-known companies from 28 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities of China.
According to statistics, China is the third largest trade partner of Sharjah. External trade with China reached Dh1.35 billion in 2006, Dh2.32 billion in 2007 and Dh3.98 billion in 2008. Trade is mainly concentrated on imports, with re-export and transit in second and third placed respectively.
The highlight of this year's event includes a wing boat and a multipurpose off road vehicle which has been a centre of attraction.
Sharjah has a strong manufacturing industry, which is a key contributor to the UAE's economic growth and accounts for 40per cent of the total companies in the sector in the country.
Among the industries that are being represented at the exhibition are hardware and building materials, special vehicles, agri-food products, engineering machine and parts, and light industries.
The CCFS is the Middle East's largest sourcing platform for Chinese products and services.
Over the last few editions, the event has been featuring a relatively focused exhibit profile. This has been done keeping in mind the specific requirements of the region.
The CCFS has been successfully showcasing China's economic marvel in the region since 2002. The response has been overwhelming and the event has clearly proved itself to be the Middle East's biggest and most credible trade platform for Chinese products and services, according to organisers.
