Children in the UAE to save the world from global warming

Dubai, Dec 15, 2009 (WAM) - Children are the heroes who can save the world and the UAE is making an effort to catch them young to tackle climate change and reduce carbon footprint for a sustainable future.
Schools across the country have been challenged to reduce their consumption of water and electricity through innovative methods, thus contributing to a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions that are responsible for global warming/climate change according to a report in "Gulf News."
Launch
The nation-wide competition was announced yesterday as part of the "Heroes of the UAE Schools" programme launched by Emirates Wild Life Society in partnership with the Ministry of Education and HSBC Bank-Middle East Limited.
The competition will be held from January 1 to March 30, 2010, and participating schools will be judged by their utility bills for the three months, which will be compared against their bills for the same months last year, as well as reviewing supporting documents of the methods employed to conserve energy and water.
Rewards for the winners of the two competitions include school energy and water makeovers and personal laptops sponsored by HSBC Bank Middle East Limited.
A national climate change quiz for students 13-14 years of age to compete in and demonstrate their knowledge is also part of the Heroes of the UAE school programme.
The quiz contest is based on the new climate change learning module, on the already widely adopted online Interactive Enviro-Spellathon at envirospellathon.com, which culminates in the national climate change quiz.
