Emirates Foundation to sponsor research on Whale Shark in Gulf waters
Abu Dhabi, Dec 15, 2009 (WAM) - The Emirates Foundation has announced a grant of Dh850,000 for the production of a documentary film and research on whale sharks in the Gulf waters.
Director of Environment Programme at the Foundation Dr. Lamya Mohammed said at a related workshop held in Fujairah that sharks represent an important component of the marine wealth because of its role in the food chain as well as the attention given to the preservation of biodiversity in the region.
The documentary and research project to be carried out by Jonathan Ali Khan and his team is expected to produce new theories on the species and will educate people about the threats posed to global shark populations. Khan has received the grant that is approximately five times the average grant for environmental research projects sponsored by the organisation, according to the foundation's CEO Peter Cleaves.
