Dubai Chamber's Bu Amim appointed to global role
Dubai, Dec 16, 2009 (WAM) - Hamad Bu Amim, Director General of the Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry, has been named Vice Chairman of the World Chambers Federation (WCF), a global body of 14,000 chambers of commerce representing the world's business community.
This is the first such honour for a Gulf business leader and the second for an Arab.
Bu Amim, who became Director General of the Dubai Chamber three years ago, said he would take the opportunity to develop relationships with the global business community.
"I take this opportunity to help bridge the gap between the global business community and help them develop a better understanding about our business culture," he told Gulf News.
"There are lots of things that we could learn from others, while there are some good practices from which others could learn from us."
He said his appointment reflects the growing importance of Arab economies in general and Dubai in particular.
"Dubai has, over the last few years, become an important player in the global economy," he added.
The appointment came during the recent Executive Board meeting of the International Chamber of Commerce held in New Delhi as part of the 90th anniversary celebrations of the world business organisation. It confirmed the decisions made by the WCF General Council in New York last October to re-elect Rona Yircali, Vice President of the Federation of Chambers of Turkish World Trade, for a third term as Chair, and Peter Mihok as Deputy Chair.
Besides Bu Amim, Yircali appointed five new vice chairs who had been previously endorsed by the WCF General Council at its New York meeting.
These included Mick Fleming, American Chamber of Commerce Executives; Mahendra Sanghi, Assocham, India; Mustafa Mansur, Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers, and Lorenzo Ysasi Martinez, Mexico City Chamber of Commerce.
Prince Sifiso Zulu, Durban Chamber of Commerce, South Africa, was re-elected as a WCF Vice Chair.
The Dubai Chamber, established in 1965, has more than 100,000 members that cater to business communities in 168 countries.
