GCC summit issues final communiqué
Kuwait, Dec 16, 209 (WAM) - The leaders of Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states reaffirmed the right of the UAE and its sovereignty over the three islands, 'the Greater and Lesser Tunbs and Abu Musa' as well as the territorial waters, airspace, continental shelf and exclusive economic zone of the three islands as the integral part of the United Arab Emirates.
In the final communiqué issued at the end of the 30th GCC summit held in Kuwait, the Council expressed its regret that the contacts with the Islamic Republic of Iran did not yield any positive result to reach a solution for the issue of the three islands, that contribute to strengthening of security and stability in the region. It also called on Iran for the consideration of all peaceful means to restore the right of the United Arab Emirates on the islands.
The GCC also urged Iran to respond to the efforts of the United Arab Emirates to resolve the issue through direct negotiations or recourse to the International Court of Justice and demanded fundamental commitment from Iran to establish good neighbourly relations, mutual respect and non-interference in internal affairs.
The GCC also asserted solidarity with Saudi Arabia in the face of attacks on its territory and violations of the border, considering that any breach of security and stability of the kingdom was a violation of the security, stability and safety of all the GCC countries.
The leaders affirmed their absolute support to right of Saudi Arabia to defend its territory and security of its citizens at the same time reiterated their full support to the unity, security and stability of the fraternal Yemen.
The leaders agreed on a candidate of the Kingdom of Bahrain as Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council, beginning in 2011.
The Communiqué said that the Supreme Council studied the effects of the global economic crisis and welcomed the efforts of GCC countries to curb this crisis, expressing confidence in the durability of the economies of countries and their ability to overcome the consequences of the crisis thanks to the safety and efficacy of policies and actions of member states in this regard.
The Council welcomed the international efforts to resolve the Iranian nuclear crisis through peaceful and diplomatic means. It expressed hope that all parties concerned will seek to reach a political settlement to allay fears and suspicions about the nature of the Iranian nuclear file, thus supporting the security and stability in the region and ensuring that countries in the region will use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.
The Council also demanded immediate suspension of Israeli settlement activities on Palestinian land, remove the apartheid wall and not to allow Israel to prejudge the status of Jerusalem, and preserve the Islamic and Christian holy sites. The Council also stressed that the achievement of a comprehensive, just and lasting peace should be based on Israel's withdrawal from all Arab territories it occupied in 1967.
It also called on Palestinian factions to understand the importance of family reunification and endeavour for a national unity government for achieving Palestinian unity.
The Supreme Council expressed its condemnation of the suicide bombings that hit Iraqi cities recently.
The Council also expressed its solidarity with the Republic of Sudan and non-acceptance of the procedures taken by the International Criminal Court in the framework of the conflict in Darfur.
The Supreme Council expressed its regret at the continued deterioration of the situation in Somalia and urged all Somali parties to abide by the agreements and commitments that have been signed in Saudi Arabia.
