Cong lauds India's stand at Copenhagen summit

CLIMATE-CONG

New Delhi, Dec 19 (PTI) Congress party Saturday hailed
the stand of India in the UN climate change summit in
Copenhagen, saying the country has not only presented its
views but also that of the developing countries strongly.

"Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Environment Minister
Jairam Ramesh strongly presented the views of India and the
developing countries," party spokesman Shakeel Ahmed told a
media briefing here.
Singh had made it clear at the conference that future
negotiations on tackling climate change should be based on
equitable burden sharing as enshrined in the Kyoto Protocol
and Bali mandate.
Ahmed described the outcome of the summit as "positive"
for the country and said that it was moving in the "right
direction" on emission cuts. He said in future negotiations,
the positives of the Copenhagen summit will be carried
forward.
The climate change conference failed to adopt a binding
treaty on emission cuts but as a face saver decided to "take
note" of a US-brokered deal with India and three other
emerging economies. PTI AMI
