ADGAS, Hyundai Heavy Industries sign US$1 billion IGD project

Abu Dhabi, Dec 29, 2009 (WAM) - Abu Dhabi Gas Liquefaction Company Ltd. (ADGAS) has signed yesterday an agreement for a US$1 billion project with Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. (HHI) for the Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) of the Integrated Gas Development (IGD) Plant on Das Island.
The agreement was signed at ADGAS Abu Dhabi Headquarters on Monday, December 28, 2009, by Fahim Kazim, ADGAS General Manager and Chang June Kang, Hyundai's Senior EVP and COO of Offshore '&' Engineering Division.
The signing ceremony was attended by H.E. Chung Yong-chill, the Korean Ambassador to the UAE and H.E. Abdulla Nasser Al Suweidi, ADNOC Deputy CEO.
Members of the senior management team of the two companies have also attended the signing ceremony. "The project we signed on behalf of ADNOC is a major milestone which reflects ADGAS new vision and commitment to participate in the country's national energy strategy, within an integrated project that also involves ADMA-OPCO and GASCO," said Mr. Fahim Kazim ADGAS General Manager.
"It is a part of the Integrated Gas Development (IGD) Project which is an ambitious and strategic initiative of ADNOC to process and supply the gas to meet the growing needs and development plans of Abu Dhabi. The 49 month project is also one of the world's largest undertakings, involving multiple sites, both offshore and onshore" added Kazim.
On the challenges involved in the IGD project, Kazim said, "Due to the limited area on Das Island, we had to reclaim an additional 108,000 square meters of land for the project facilities and to build a 100 meter long jetty for off loading of heavy 1500 Tons modules." "As part of ADGAS human resources development strategy, we were keen on stress the issue of training our teams as part of the project, making it a great opportunity for training, skill development and building knowledge. We requested that HHI provides training to ADGAS personnel, covering Home Office activities, vendor shop equipment training, and onsite training during construction," added ADGAS General Manager.
"The US$1 billion IGD project represents ADGAS share of the overall mega offshore and onshore project which also involve ADMA-OPCO and GASCO'" said Bader Al Mohamadi, ADGAS Projects Division Manager.
"It will involve processing an additional 1 billion scfd of high pressure gas and transporting it from ADMA-OPCO's offshore Umm Shaif field via a new 46" diameter pipeline to the ADGAS new IGD facilities at Das Island, where the gas will be conditioned, and sent through the 30" diameter Offshore Associated Gas (OAG) pipeline to Habshan," added Mohamadi.
The first LNG producer in the whole MENA region, ADGAS is engaged in long term sales contract with Tokyo Electrical Power Company (TEPCO). However, ADGAS has recently modified its vision to provide for a role in the UAE national energy strategy.
The new IGD project represents the an important element in ADGAS involvement in this strategy.
The IGD detailed Engineering and Procurement activities will be carried out from HHI Home Office in Ulsan, South Korea. They are expected to be completed in 20 months from award. However, process modules prefabrication will continue in HHI prefabrication facilities in Korea until month 30 from award.
The whole IGD facilities will be built on reclaimed land due to the limited land availability at Das Island. Additionally a construction jetty will be built at the end of the process site which will be utilized for offloading the large plant modules. The Detailed engineering for the Civil and Marines works (The reclaimed area) has been subcontracted by HHI to MAPES of Seoul, South Korea; a renowned specialized consultant.
