Museum Fellowships set up for Emiratis
Dubai, Dec 31, 2009 (WAM)- In order to help prepare Emiratis get into the profession as museum curators, educators and managers, the Emirates Foundation - one of the UAE’s leading philanthropic institutions - has created the country’s first-ever ‘Museum Fellowships’according to a report in 'Khaleej Times.'
The fellowships, which will be offered to Emirati students who prove their abilities during a five-month Foundation Course and Workshops for Museum Professionals, was a follow-up on the ‘Museum Studies Scholarships’ announced last October.
The Foundation course and workshop will be held in Abu Dhabi between February and June 2010.
Noting the increasing numbers of museums in the UAE and the future requirement for Emirati museum professionals such as curators, educators and managers, Salwa Mikdadi, head of the Emirates Foundation’s Arts and Culture Programme, explained, “The purpose of this unique workshop is to increase UAE expertise in the area of Museum Studies.”
The intensive foundation course will be offered to young Emiratis who are interested in becoming museum professionals, who accomplished their undergraduate degrees and have a good command of English.
The workshop will be interactive with on-line learning and research. Two intensive week-long workshops will be taught at the Emirates Foundation by Museum Studies Professors from John F. Kennedy University in California, a pioneer in educating museum professionals. Upon completion of the course, students will be eligible for an internship in a major museum in the UK or the US, and will also have the opportunity to pursue a Masters degree in Museum Studies.
“We are very excited about this workshop which will provide future Emirati museum leaders and professionals with a broad, global overview of museum functions and opportunities relevant to the UAE. We hope that it will allow young Emirati graduates to understand Museum Studies more clearly and be on an equal footing with other museum professionals around the world,” said Mikdadi.
