UAE leadership is keen to establish values of justice, tolerance and respect for cultures to ensure stability in the region, Saqr Ghobash

Abu Dhabi, Jan 5, 2010 (WAM)- HE Saqr Ghobash Saeed Ghobash, Minister of Labour and Chairman of the National Media Council said that UAE has highlighted the need to uphold the values of tolerance, justice, equality and respect for cultures and religions in the face of injustice, extremism and terrorism to maintain security and stability in the region.
He said this while addressing a seminar on "The role of Arab media in addressing the phenomenon of terrorism" at the Emirates Centre for Strategic Studies and Research (ECSSR). The seminar was organized by the National Media Council in collaboration with ECSSR and Arab League.
HE Saqr Ghobash said that H.H. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, UAE President and H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of UAE and Ruler of Dubai are keen to establish the values of justice, tolerance, equality and respect for cultures and religions in order to ensure security and stability for all and to continue the economic and social development within the UAE and abroad.
In his keynote speech on the opening of seminar that was attended by senior officials and experts from the Arab League and a number of League members he said that : It gives me great pleasure to be with you in this forum, organized by the National Media Council with cooperation from Emirates Centre for Studies and Research Strategy and the Technical Secretariat of the League of Arab States to discuss one of the most important issues facing the contemporary Arab societies, namely, the role of media in addressing the phenomenon of terrorism".
He stated that the media's role in addressing the phenomenon of terrorism still involves a lot of ambiguity, confusion and uncertainty. And this meeting reflects our keenness to develop a coherent Arab media to work as a constructive force in the fight against terrorism.
He also said that discussions on terrorism have focused that the Arab region is one of the terrorism sources in the world, but the objective observer will find that this region is one of the main victims of terrorism.
He held that Arab media bears a great responsibility in combating terrorism, not by way of reaction, but by taking the lead through radio and television programs, content of press releases presenting enlightened ideas that reflect the principles of our tolerant Islamic religion and authentic Arab traditions in dealing with people away from intolerance and narrow-mindedness.
Ghobash stressed that the role of media in combating terrorism cannot be through seasonal responses in times of difficulty and crisis, but by providing appropriate intellectual alternatives especially to young people, in order to immunize and strengthen their loyalty to their homeland. He also stressed that media has a major contribution to attract groups of young people and involve them in cultural and constructive activities. He pointed out that the role of media in the fight against terrorism is not an isolated individual act but must be shared by all institutions.
At the end of his speech, Ghobash confirmed that upon the directives of UAE's wise leadership, the country has strived to establish an informational thought and approaches based on tolerance, moderation and recognition of others and respecting other cultures and religions.
