HAAD tells pregnant women to take H1N1 Vaccine
Abu Dhabi, Jan 6, 2010, (WAM)- The Health Authority – Abu Dhabi (HAAD), the regulatory body of the healthcare sector in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, announced today that the H1N1 vaccine is now available for pregnant women in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.
The Authority called on all pregnant women to take the vaccine to avoid catching the H1N1 flu and protect their babies
Engineer Zaid AL Siksek, CEO of HAAD said: “In line with the H1N1 national vaccination strategy and according to priority groups, the Health Authority – Abu Dhabi launched the H1N1 vaccination campaign in November 2009 by providing the vaccine to Hajj pilgrims. Today we started the second phase of vaccination which covers pregnant women.
HAAD encourages all pregnant women to take the vaccine to avoid any complications that may result from catching the H1N1 flu”, he added.
Pregnant women who are followed by governmental health care services have been advised to get the vaccine at their antenatal clinics in the hospital or at Maternity and Child Healthcare Centre in Primary Healthcare Centre / Ambulatory Health Services.
Pregnant women who are followed by private sector have been advised to get the vaccine at the designated clinics after showing a referral letter from their doctors.
The authorised clinics in Abu Dhabi City are Disease prevention and Screening Centre (DPSC), Bain AL Jesrain Health Centre and Khalifa A Health Centre.
In Al Ain City, Disease prevention and Screening Centre (DPSC), Al Muwaiji Health Centre, Al Niyadat Health Centre and Mezyad Health Centre have been authorised by HAAD.
Al Gharbia Region, the Madinat Zayed, Delma, Silaa, Marfaa and Gayathi health centres have been designated.
Dr. Jamal Al Mutawa, Section Head of Communicable Diseases at HAAD, said: “Pregnant women are being offered the vaccination as a top priority because they are more likely to develop serious complications from H1N1 flu. The World Health Organization stated that up to 10% of all hospitalized patients with H1N1 flu are women who are more than three months pregnant; in addition, pregnant women are more likely to need care in an intensive care unit compared with the general population.
The vaccine is offered for free; pregnant women should contact their obstetric / maternity clinic in the Hospital or Ambulatory Health Service and will be offered the vaccine or referred to the nearest vaccination centre. Pregnant women following up in a private clinic just need to get a referral letter from their doctor to get the vaccine in the government clinics”, Dr. Al Mutawa added.
The H1N1 vaccine is licensed for use in pregnant women by World Health Organisation (WHO), the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the European Commission who carefully considered all the evidence and recommended it for use.
Women who are known to have become pregnant shortly after receiving the vaccine have gone on to have normal pregnancies.
