UAE bags two gold in Arab shooting event
Kuwait, Jan 11, 2010 (WAM) - Shooters from the UAE put up a splendid display by winning two gold medals in the Ninth Arab Shooting Championship being held in Kuwait according to a report in "Khaleej Times."
UAE’s Salem Al Qaidi and Asma Al Nuaimi emerged winners in the 10m air rifle and 50m rifle events, respectively, at the Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Sabah Olympic Shooting Complex in Kuwait.
The UAE women’s team gave a tough fight to their opponents and finished second in three events — 10m air rifle, 10m air pistol and 50m rifle.
A total of 16 Arab countries are participating in the eight-day championship, which opened on Monday. While Iraq is participating in the event after a gap of few years, Yemen made its entry for the first time this year.
The UAE has always produced good results in major shooting events, with Sheikh Ahmad Mohammed Hasher Al Maktoum winning the gold at the Athens Olympics in the Double Trap category in 2004. – Khaleej Times
