UAE and Hong Kong bilateral trade reaches Dh16 billion
Hong Kong - UAE is the 21st trading partner of Hong Kong with total bilateral trade valued at US$4.38 m (Dhs16 billion) in 2008, 7 per cent higher than in 2007.
The UAE is among other countries that has benefited from a US$10.3 million (Dhs38 million) buyer sponsorship package offered by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) to attend several international trade fairs that have been lined up for 2010.
These fairs according to Sales Manager of HKTDC, Candy Kwan hold immense potential for UAE companies interested in expanding their businesses or in consolidating their position in Asia .
Speaking to "The Gulf Today" in an exclusive interview at the sideline of Asia's largest Toys and Games Fair that opened in Wan Chai, Hong Kong on Monday, Kwan said that HKTDC organises over 30 specialised trade fairs a year ranging from electronics, lighting and building materials, to watches and clocks, among others. She said that to tap into the burgeoning Chinese market, HKTDC encourages more UAE companies to take part in the Hong Kong fairs.
Kwan said that the total sponsorship package for international buyers including the UAE, comprised of a complimentary return air ticket and hotel accommodation, for the prospective invitees to attend trade fairs organised by HKTDC up to March 2010. She disclosed that in 2008, over 2,100 UAE buyers visited HKTDC fairs and expects the turnout to be even more this year.
She said that the strong participation is expected to come against the backdrop of the increasing trade between Hong Kong and the UAE and the region in general.
"Our fairs are the best avenue for one-stop sourcing from parts to finished products, from traditional models to innovative designs. Therefore, fairs in Hong Kong present opportunities for companies in the UAE to source quality products, get market intelligence, make alliances and business contacts for expansion and development into new markets," said Kwan.
Over half of Hong Kong's exports to the Middle East last year were to the UAE, according to the South East Asian country's trade authorities.
The HKTDC statistics shows that about 54 per cent of Hong Kong's exports to the Middle East region were to the UAE, making it the largest single export partner of the South East Asian island nation.
Total exports from Hong Kong to the United Arab Emirates were US$2.26m between January and November 2009, out of the total exports of US$4.2m to the entire Middle East region. The re-exports of Hong Kong products from the UAE stood at US$2.25m, while the imports from UAE to Hong Kong , was US$1.57m , in the same period of time.
Exports from the UAE to Hong Kong in the same period also amounted to US$1.57m .
Statistics show that toys and games are a major export from Hong Kong to the UAE. In 2008, Hong Kong exported a total of USUS$74 million (Dhs272 million) worth of toys, games and sporting goods to the UAE, up 2 per cent over 2007.
Kwan disclosed that Hong Kong is an important exporter of clothing and jewellery in the world and UAE buyers are welcome to visit the trade fairs for sourcing.
Kwan said that four trade fairs will be running concurrently at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre in Wan Chai. These include the Toys & Games, baby products, stationery and product licensing fair which runs from January 11 to 14.
The combined events organized by HKTDC, has attracted over 2,500 exhibitors from 38 countries worldwide. The exhibitors are showcasing a wide variety of quality products and services.
The joint opening ceremony was conducted by Wong Tit Shing chairman of the HKTDC Toys Advisory committee and Ms. Carrie Lam.
The Hong Kong Toys & Games Fair is the largest of its kind in Asia and the second largest in the world.
The four concurrent fairs have created synergy with great business potential and allowed a one-stop sourcing for the almost 87 international buyers who have converged here from all over the world, thus Hong Kong, no doubt remains the world's second largest exporter of toys and games after the Chinese mainland.
