Women are committed to development of renewable energy: Sheikha Fatima
Abu Dhabi, Jan 12, 2010 (WAM)- The United Arab Emirates is fortunate to have been blessed with ample resources of oil and gas - among the most important of the world's conventional sources of energy but, at the same time, however, has committed to research and to invest in the development of non-conventional sources of energy, in particular renewable energy, HH Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, Chairperson of the UAE General Women's Union (GWU), said yesterday.
“It is right and proper that we should do so, not just to ensure that we continue to play a significant role of the world's energy supplies in the years to come but because we, as custodians of these existing resources, have a responsibility to future generations to use them wisely, Sheikh Fatima said in a statement issued on the occasion of holding a symposium on ''Women and Renewable Energy: Future Alternatives” in Abu Dhabi yesterday.
The event was hosted by the GWU under the patronage of Sheikha Fatima.
''The development of renewable energy is something that concerns us all. I believe that it is an issue to which all women, concerned about the future of their children, should be firmly committed", Sheikha Fatima added.
Following is the full text of Sheikh Fatima's statement:
It is in the nature of the world's women that they, above all, must be concerned not just with today, but with tomorrow. Our duty, our responsibility, is to bring the new generations into the world, to nurture and to raise them and to prepare them for the years that lie ahead.
Naturally, we are, therefore, always concerned about the world in which our children will live, and into which they will bear our grandchildren and subsequent generations.
It is because of that aspect of our outlook on life that we look forward to a world that is peaceful, where everyone may enjoy access to good health care, satisfactory education and living conditions, where basic human rights are enjoyed by all and where essential human dignities are preserved and protected.
Many factors are involved, if all of this is to be achieved. But one of the most fundamental of them is that the development of our societies, today and tomorrow, should be undertaken in a sustainable way. The resources of this world are finite; they need to be used with care and to be preserved for the generations to come.
It is appropriate, therefore, that we should pay particular attention to the way in which we use our energy resources. Conventional sources of energy are rapidly depleting. If we do not take care to identify and to use alternative, renewable sources of energy, then the future for our long term development will be bleak indeed.
