138 signatory states to take part in IRENA's meeting
Abu Dhabi, Jan 14, 2010 (WAM)- The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) has announced that 138 signatory nations confirmed their attendance of the third session of the Preparatory Commission for the agency, to be held on Sunday in Abu Dhabi.
Addressing a press conference in Abu Dhabi yesterday, IRENA's Interim Director Helene Pelosse said the meeting will discuss key issues relating to the agency's activities in 2010, as well as 25 ratifications of IRENA statute.
She said that Belgium and Turkmenistan had already signed IRENA's statute and predicted that more nations will join the agency soon. Pelosse said the Secretariat was expected to move into the IRENA building by mid December.
"As from 2011 Masdar City will host IRENA's seat of the Secretariat, the first carbon-neutral, zero-waste metropolis on Earth," she added.
Pelosse pointed out that the meeting will look into speeding up and expanding energy transfer and boosting sustainable use of all forms of renewable energy.
The meeting will also discuss the agency's work programme, the current year's budget of US$15 million and the best ways to invest the US$50 million grant, provided by the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development. The Fund had pledged to administer grants of US$350 in the next seven years.
Pelosse said that the meeting will elect the members of the agency's board and secretariat.
She revealed that the agency has started hiring both permanent staff and seconded staff for its Secretariat in Abu Dhabi with an emphasis on gender balance.
"At my nomination as Interim Director-General of IRENA, I made a commitment: I will staff IRENA with 50% women. Some of you might be interested in joining IRENA or are in key positions to identify possible candidates. Help me to make IRENA a diverse, open and active organisation to advance the cause of renewable energy worldwide and to empower women: pass this message to your networks. I look forward to hearing from you or meeting you in the future. I am quite confident that we can make it happen - to make IRENA successful by promoting women," an article at IRENA newsletter quoted Pelosse as saying.
She said that IRENA will continue regional and international outreach as IPCC Plenary meeting adopting the first Special Report on Renewable Energy will be hosted by UAE in February 2011 in close relationship with IRENA. She also said IRENA will strengthen ties with institutions based in the UAE.
