UAE, Libya explore avenues of joint cooperation
Tripoli - Jan 14, 2010 (WAM)- UAE Foreign Minister H.H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan called yesterday for formulating a permanent Emirati-Libyan committee at foreign ministers' level to push bilateral cooperation and bonds forward.
''We hope that Libya under the leadership of Colonel Muammar Gaddafi, leader of the Libyan Revolution would play an important role when it hosts and chairs the upcoming African Union summit.
We are aware that Libya will have an active role in developing the joint Arab action to a better level than of today," Sheikh Abdullah said while co-chairing a session of talks between the UAE and Libya with Secretary of the General People's Congress for Foreign Liaison and International Cooperation Musa Kusa here yesterday.
Sheikh Abdullah affirmed the UAE's sincere determination to boost its relations with its Arab brethren especially Libya which he said has special bonds with the UAE since the establishment of the federation.
The UAE foreign minister outlined Tripoli's stances towards the UAE since that time.
He hoped that bilateral meetings and exchange of visits between top officials would open up new avenues of cooperation.
For his part, the Libyan senior official hoped Sheikh Abdullah’s visit would further strengthen joint cooperation in various fields.
He also lauded the progress the UAE-Libya ties are witnessing.
Over two days, the top Emirati and Libyan officials would explore prospects of bilateral cooperation and follow up implementation of agreements and memoranda of understanding signed between the two countries.
The meeting will also look into a proposal for exchange of visits between businessmen, bankers and investors in the two countries, conduct joint workshops, share information and experiences in economic and financial sectors and expand scope of investment in tourism.
The two sides are expected to sign a series of agreements and memos including a one for forming the joint committee.
Sheikh Abdullah, who arrived in Tripoli yesterday and received by Kusa, is accompanied by a delegation comprising representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dubai Customs and Ports Authority and Abu Dhabi Fund for Development.
